Dragon Con just wrapped up its 25th Anniversary weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.  What orginally started as a 1400 people convention has now grown to over 40,000 people converging on downtown Atlanta over Labor Day Weekend for the Dragon Con festivities and events.

The Braves will celebrate the milestone win in more than 10,000 ways including: A donation of 10,000 Braves tickets to charitable organizations. At the first home game after the historic 10,000th win, fans will witness a special pregame ceremony featuring a video of some of the most memorable moments from the 10,000 wins. A 10,000 wins flag will be unfurled in the ballpark, and the outfield grass will feature the number 10,000. All fans at the first home game following the historic 10,000th win will receive a commemorative poster (image attached), and the first 10,000 fans will receive a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit or spicy chicken biscuit.

During the pre-game ceremony on the field on the night after the 10,000th win, the team will honor a randomly selected “10,000th Win Fan of the Game, who will receive a grand prize package including: $1,000 Braves Bucks, good towards tickets, concessions, and merchandise at Turner Field o A VIP seat upgrade for the game -  Two Nights Stay at the Hilton Atlanta, breakfast, and 10,000 Hilton Honors Points -  A party for 10 at 300 Atlanta Bowling Center -  10,000 Game Points at Dave and Busters Atlanta -  A $500 Chevron Gift Card – 10 tickets to the 10,000 Maniacs Concert in August at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheatre Peachtree City.

Last week, the Georgia State School of Hospitality students transformed the Georgia World Congress Center into a fiercely competitive battleground where hospitality employees from all over Atlanta competed for the title of Champion of Atlanta during the Battle for Atlanta, Suite Taste of Atlanta 2011.

Competition is fierce as hundreds of employees from hotel and hospitality companies throughout Atlanta are pitted against one another in the ultimate quest for the grand prize trophy and title of Champion of Atlanta. This year Hilton Atlanta was the team to beat since in 2010, we took home the Grand Champion, 1st Place title and bragging rights.

Seriously competitive games like The Blindfolded Bed Making Contest and Toilet Paper Dodge Ball, all designed by our students, create total pandemonium in halls of the World Congress Center as companies compete for the grand prize.
 

This annual fundraiser is completely planned and executed by Professor Debi Robbe’s Expos, Fairs and Entertainment Management class. In this hands-on course, students work as a team to oversee each and every detail of this highly entertaining event including the promotion, decor, game-design, set-up, corporate registration and sponsorship solicitation.  All of the proceeds from this event are used to provide scholarships for the Georgia State School of Hospitality.

This year,  Hilton Atlanta placed 3rd as the Georgia World Congress Center took the 1st Place title.

In honor of Earth Day in April, Nikolai’s Roof’s monthly wine dinner will present Wines That Rock from the award-winning sustainable Mendocino Wine Company on Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. The all-inclusive cost is $110 per person for a five-course dinner with wine pairings.  Nikolai’s Roof is located on the top floor of the downtown Hilton Atlanta hotel.

Guests will dine on cuisine from Chef Olivier DeBusschere while listening to legendary artists and their timeless albums – blending one-of-a-kind wines with Rock ‘n Roll mythology.  Classic tracks from The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Police and The Woodstock Festival will be played while winemaker Mark Beaman shares his inspiration for creating these custom wines. An after-party immediately following the dinner will feature Atlanta’s own The Rockingbirds performing Woodstock classics live in the Point of View lounge located adjacent to Nikolai’s Roof. 

As passionate wine lovers and die-hard music fans, Wines That Rock has created its own category in the wine industry – “great tasting wines inspired by music”.  The portfolio of wines include The Rolling Stones Forty Licks Merlot, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon, The Police Synchronicity Red Blend and Woodstock Chardonnay. Each wine captures the quality and spirit of Rock ‘n Roll mythology in its great taste, iconic album art for labels, earth-friendly production and great consumer value. 

Nikolai’s Roof General Manager, Daniel Rudiger said, “I was excited to hear about Wines That Rock from the Mendocino Wine Company because of their reputation for being “green” and eco-friendly. They also make some pretty solid wines.” 

Wines That Rock is crafted partly from the hands of Mendocino Wine Company rockstar winemaker Mark Beaman, a talented winemaker whose passions are quality, sustainability and Rock ‘n Roll.  The process for making the infamous Synchronicity wine began by listening to the legendary Police album to uncover the layers needed in its wine.

“The term Synchronicity, Sting’s magnetic vocals and the theme of light and dark in the music were the main influences on the wine,” Beaman said.  “Synchronicity as a meaningful mix of seemingly unrelated events resulting in a significant sum, lead me to a red wine blend of varieties not commonly seen together.  The light and dark nature of the music pointed to a blend that could represent both a friendly and heavy side, along with sexy aromatics to lure people in, but with the flavor profile and structure to hold people’s attention.”  Beaman will elaborate on this and other featured wines at the dinner as well.
